more battlefields + music
Our next outing was to the Wilderness and Chancellorsville battlefields. The photos above were
taken along the wooded trails of the Chancellorsville Battlefield. Will was very interested in
reading all the signs with Pa-Pa Steve. Unfortunately, it rained and Will slept while we were at
the Wilderness Battlefield, so I don't have any photos, but we stopped along our drive and read
all of the markers.
After a rainy afternoon, while cooking dinner my dad got out his computer to play some of his
current favorite music from NPR. We discovered that we like some of the same artists, Of Monsters
& Men and Mumford & Sons. He introduced us to Beirut, old school Leonard Cohen, and Gillian Welch.
We introduced him to The Lumineers, who it turned out he had already heard before. Of course, who
hasn't heard of "Ho Hey". We had a nice little dance party, and Will was really intrigued watching
the Tiny Desk Concerts.
Speaking of music...
On Friday, after Matt and I worked all day and my dad and Will toured the Manassas Battlefield
(ie. Battle of Bull Run), we headed downtown for the Market Square Concert Series. We stopped for
pizza on the patio at Castiglia's, where Will acted totally silly with his pizza. Seems to be his
thing every time we eat there. Then we went to listen to the UMW Philharmonic play in Market Square,
and their special guest was Caressa Cameron, Miss America 2010. We got to see my co-worker play
percussion in the Philharmonic. It was a great concert! Just perfect for a summer evening in Old
Town. Will enjoyed the music and clapped and danced around! The best part was the Civil War
montage at the end where they played parts of Civil War songs from the North and South. It was a
great and unexpected ending to our week of Civil War research! Of course, we had to grab coffee
at Hyperion Espresso on our way to the car!
